Quick Fix Instant Noodles (for when you just can't even)
Have you ever come home after a long day of lectures, a short day of lectures, or a long day of existential crises and drug abuse and just been unable to do anything? If yes, then congratulations, you're a student. The slightest bit of physical or mental exertion and you can't even anymore. You're done. Of course, you need sustenance, but how are you going to cook a nutritious meal when you can't even begin to even?
These noodles are the antidote to your laziness. They're delicious, fast and kind-of healthy (I'm not going to pretend like they're some sort of superfood). They're ready in less than 10 minutes, because we use instant noodles (ramen noodles are my noodle of choice). However, be very sure to discard the little packet of spices that comes with the noodles - it's basically a packet of carcinogenic chemicals that you really don't want to put into your body. The great thing about these instant noodles, is that they usually cost only 15-20 cents per packet (I'm thinking in Irish prices) and they're available from all major supermarkets.
These noodles are ready in less than 10 minutes and are my go-to snack for when I just can't even |
Serves 1 person who just can't even
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon of oil (I go with rapeseed but olive also works perfectly)
½ a small onion
1 small tomato
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 packet of instant noodles
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon curry powder
¼ teaspoon coriander
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon peanut butter
1 teaspoon tahini (if you have it lying around - it adds a sesame flavour which I love, but really, don't sweat if you don't have it)
Method:
In a small saucepan bring the oil to a medium-high heat. Finely chop and add the onions, stirring until soft, about 3-4 minutes.
Finely dice and add the tomato and garlic. Stir in, heat through and add all the spices, the peanut butter, the soy sauce and the tahini. This will take another 2-3 minutes. If you wanted to add some sort of vegetable here, add five minutes to the cooking time and add them here. I recommend mushrooms and green onions (scallions).
Add the noodles and the water. Break up the noodles with a fork and bring to a boil. When the noodles have softened slightly, stir constantly for 3-4 minutes until cooked through. Transfer to a bowl or eat it right out of the saucepan, you lazy bastard.
